A preliminary archaeological assessment was undertaken at 7–13 Ormond Quay Upper on 16-17 August 2017. It consisted of the monitoring of two geotechnical bore holes and six test pits. The purpose of the exercise was to ascertain the extent and character of archaeological deposits onsite, and therefore, determine the impact of the proposed development on such material. The investigation demonstrated the presence of extant post-medieval deposits underlying concrete slab in both the basement of the former hotel, as well as the external rear yard. Consequently, a further programme of testing was recommended, which will be undertaken post-demolition. The key objective of the testing will be to inform the archaeological mitigation strategy that will implemented for the site in advance of, and during construction works.
