The site is bordered by the Ballyogan Road to the north, and the Glenamuck Link Road to the east, while ‘The Park’ commercial centre bounds the site to the south and south-west. The western portion of the proposed development is in the townland of Jamestown, while its eastern section lies within Carrickmines Great. The key objective of the assessment was to establish if the Pale boundary followed the line of the Jamestown/Carrickmines Great townland boundary.
Testing took place over four days and seven trenches were opened. No features, finds or deposits of archaeological interest were identified. The Pale boundary terminates to the west of the site, while the site of Carrickmines Castle lies 400m to the north-east. Therefore, it is probable that the medieval earthwork originally continued west to intersect with the castle defences. However, there was no demonstrable evidence that the Jamestown/Carrickmines Great townland boundary represented the Pale earthwork in this area. Consequently, a natural elevated scarp to the south of the site, in conjunction with the Ballyogan Stream, may have substituted for the construction of more formal Pale defences in this area. This finds parallels in Kilgobbin to the west, where investigations across a small section of the Pale boundary indicated it was a natural scarp with no associated archaeological features.
