Monitoring was carried out at Bremore Castle, Balbriggan, Co. Dublin on 9 October 2017. The excavation of a trench, 5m north-south x 6m, to a depth of 1m below the present ground level, was to provide a concrete foundation for the construction of a gatehouse. The gatehouse will be located in line with the door on the western façade of the castle, at a gap which has been left for this purpose within the partially reconstructed western wall of the yard area. Monitoring of the excavation of the foundation trench uncovered the concrete foundations of farmers' sheds that had previously been levelled and made up ground of beach stone, breeze blocks and other modern detritus. The underlying subsoil was identified at a minimum of 0.3m below the current ground surface. No features or artefacts of archaeological significance were present and the construction of the gatehouse will have no impact on archaeological remains.
