Testing was carried out on behalf of Gannon Homes Ltd in advance of a planning application being submitted for a future development. The proposed development site is located to the north of the Rathbeale Road (R125), 0.5 - 0.6km to the south and south-west of the Broad Meadow River, and c. 2.5km to the north-west of Swords town centre. Testing followed a geophysical survey carried out by Target Geophysics (Licence No. 11R0038) and lies within the “Oldtown Mooretown Local Area Plan” lands which was undertaken to manage development in and around an extensive early medieval enclosure (DU011-144), which lies c. 500m to the south-east of the current proposed development area.
Testing took place over 5 days from 25 September 2017 and two discreet areas of archaeological activity were identified: a probable cereal drying kiln and a single pit. It is recommended that the two areas of archaeological activity be fully excavated in advance of development.
