Monitoring was carried out for Wenty Park Ltd in response to a planning condition relating to a proposed residential development at Churchtown Road Upper, Dundrum, Dublin 14 (Planning Ref. An Bord Pleanála PL 06D.245137, DLRCC D15A/0081).
The proposed development site is bounded to the north and east by the Churchtown Road and St Nahi’s Church and graveyard are situated across the road to the east (DU022-016001-003). Finsbury Park lies to the south and the school buildings of Notre Dame Des Missions are located to the west.
Monitoring follows various archaeological investigations on the site from 2003 including geophysical survey (2005), testing (2005, 2006 & 2007) and excavations (2007). The 2007 excavations uncovered extensive early medieval and medieval remains associated with St Nahi’s church outside of the development area to the east. A desktop study carried out by Courtney Deery Heritage Consultancy in 2015 prepared as part of a renewed planning application for the site summarised the previous investigations.
Monitoring took place intermittently between July and August 2017 and no features, finds or deposits of archaeological interest were identified. No further mitigation measures are necessary in relation to this development.
