Archaeological monitoring of trial pits was carried out by AECOM on behalf of the Department for Infrastructure – Roads. The trial pits were excavated as part of Geotechnical Ground Investigation works associated with the planned A24 Ballynahinch Bypass on the eastern outskirts of Ballynahinch in County Down
The planned Scheme consists of a 3.1km bypass providing a widened single carriageway bypass with overtaking opportunities around the eastern periphery of Ballynahinch. The Scheme will run from a new roundabout at the junction of the A24 Belfast Road with the A21 Saintfield Road, to a new roundabout located at the existing junction of the B2 Downpatrick Road with the A24 Drumaness Road.
Thirty-eight trial pits were excavated typically between 1m and 1.2m wide by approximately 4m long in plan area. While nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered within these trial pits, their excavation contributed to the archaeological understanding of the deposit sequence along the Scheme and helped inform the design of a suitable archaeological mitigation strategy which included pre-development archaeological testing.
