Monitoring of ground works associated with a proposed residential development adjacent to 97 Gilnahirk Road, Belfast was carried out in February 2017 in response to a planning condition imposed upon the development relating to the site of a Defense Heritage “Defended Forwarded location” (no. 591) which was recorded in heritage archives as being located within the site boundaries.
Monitoring of topsoil stripping revealed that topsoil overlay a mixed orange/brown glacial till across the development site, while supervision of foundation trench excavation confirmed this to be a completely natural deposit.
No archaeological or Defense Heritage features were identified during the course of monitoring.
