An archaeological evaluation was undertaken prior to the construction of a single wind turbine on lands 503m north-west of Donard View, Balhoran, Co Down.
Monitoring was conducted for the footprint of the proposed turbine, its associated hard stand and also its access track. The topsoil removal was conducted using a back-acting machine fitted with a toothless bucket.
Monitoring identified a uniform depth of topsoil material across the site and it seems likely that this area has been subject to extensive ground levelling works during the construction of the airfield. The topsoil had a uniform depth of 0.4m and gave way to naturally occurring subsoil, which consisted of a yellow/grey clay.
No archaeological features/deposits were identified during the course of the evaluation.
