An archaeological evaluation was undertaken prior to the proposed construction of a residential nursing home on lands at Kiltonga Industrial Estate, Old Belfast Road, Newtownards.
A series of 8 test trenches were excavated by mechanical digger fitted with a toothless bucket. The depths of the trenches varied slightly across the site with the deepest being 0.4m and the shallowest 0.18m. The trenches were excavated through a relatively loose modern fill material directly onto subsoil. This consisted of a dark/mid red sandy stoney material which changed from a sandy to clayish material towards the north-west corner of the site leading to the pond (along the route of a previously known waterway), consistent plough furrows were also evident in the trenches.
No archaeological features were identified within any of the trenches.
