An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the construction of a proposed residential development on lands between The Sacred Heart Grammar School and Newry High School, Ashgrove Avenue, Newry.
The archaeological consisted of the total topsoil removal of the northernmost field within the development area. The stripped area measured 94m south-south-west/north-north-east by 67m, with a total area of 6298m2. A further 5 test trenches (ranging from 58m to 137m in length) were also excavated in the southernmost field of the development area. The trenches were excavated using a back-acting machine fitted with a toothless bucket to the levels of naturally occurring subsoil or archaeological strata, whichever was highest.
Throughout the evaluation, topsoil was found consisting of a greyish-brown sandy clay, with a depth ranging from 0.2-0.5m, and overlaying naturally occurring subsoil, a compact yellowish-brown sandy clay with infrequent stone inclusions.
No archaeological deposits were identified during the course of the evaluation.
