An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the construction of a ferry terminal and facilities adjacent to 80 Greencastle Pier Road, Greencastle, Co. Down.
A total of 6 trenches were excavated within the area of the proposed carpark and ticket office. All trenches were excavated to the level of naturally occurring subsoil by a mechanical digger fitted with a toothless bucket. In Trench 5, a number of animal bones, probably sheep, were uncovered. These were viewed by a DfC:HED inspector who was on site at the time of discovery and agreed with the on site archaeologist that these were modern and of no archaeological interest.
The upgrade and widening of the road extended from the proposed car park and ticket office, along the Greencastle Pier Road to the junction with Fair Road. It extended along both sides of the Greencastle Pier Road with passing bays located at intervals along the road. Monitoring was carried out along a series of sections of road widening, which were then constructed before moving to the next section. During the course of monitoring the road widening a small derelict house, which was recorded on the 1st edition OS map, was demolished. The ground plan of this house was recorded before monitoring of the road widening continued.
No archaeological deposits were identified during the course of the evaluation.
