An archaeological evaluation was undertaken ahead of the proposed construction of a replacement dwelling with granny annex at 86 Ballydrain Road, Comber, Co. Down.
A total of three test trenches were excavated by mechanical digger fitted with a toothless bucket and under strict archaeological supervision. The depths of the trenches remained constant across the site, the trenches were excavated through a mid-brown topsoil directly onto an orange sandy clay subsoil with very occasional small stones present. Two separate field drains were seen extending east-west through trenches 2 and 3 to the east of the site. Cuts for smaller drains extending into these larger ones could also be seen extending in a north-south direction presumably as drainage for the lawn to the rear of the existing property.
No archaeological features were identified within any of the trenches.
