Monitoring was carried out for two trial pits and one slit trench within the area of constraint for DG107‐053, zone of archaeological potential for the historic settlement of Ballyshannon. One of the trial pits and the slit trench were located in Erne Street and the other trial pit was located on footpath north of Ernedale Heights located to the north of Erne Street. These works were carried out as part of a Site Investigations Contract in advance of Donegal Countywide Watermains Rehabilitation Scheme.
A third trial pit had originally been proposed for excavation within the centre of Erne Street but this was cancelled due to recent tarmacadam surface being laid along this street.
Monitoring was recommended for this area in an archaeological assessment carried out for Donegal Countywide Watermains Rehabilitation Scheme due to the works being within the area of constraint for DG107‐053.
All pits and trenches showed extensive evidence of previous ground disturbance for services. No archaeological finds, features or deposits were uncovered during the course of monitoring these works.
