Pre-development archaeological evaluation works were undertaken during 11 – 13 April 2017 at a proposed development site at lands immediately adjacent to 1 Ballynagard Crescent, Culmore, Derry, Co. Londonderry (Planning Ref: Planning Ref: A/2011/0197/F), having been commissioned by Bayfield Developments Ltd. The works undertaken are intended to provide additional information for the Department for Communities: Historic Environment Division: Historic Monuments Unit (DfC:HED:HMU) prior to making a Final Consultation Response under Planning Policy Statement 6: Built Heritage 3 (PPS 6:BH3) in response to a Planning Application for a proposed development comprising the construction of 50 Proposed Social Dwellings plus Changing Facility, 11-a-side Football Pitch and Children's Play Area and ancillary siteworks including public road improvements to Alder Road and provision of footpath at the site.
Twelve evaluation trenches comprising a total of c.1,250m of linear trenching were excavated within the boundaries of the proposed development area. On-site evaluation works revealed undisturbed glacial subsoil and glacial subsoil disturbed by agricultural activities comprising deep ploughing and the remains of potato rigs throughout each of the trenches.
No archaeological features, remains or deposits were identified during the evaluation works.
