Archaeological monitoring of groundworks was undertaken at the site of proposed development at Coleraine Public Library, Queen Street, Coleraine, Co. Londonderry during August 2017 – January 2018, having been commissioned by Hamilton Architects on behalf of Libraries NI.
Sub-surface works were relatively limited and almost entirely restricted to layers associated with the construction of the existing library building. Works undertaken comprised the removal of existing surfaces and modern structures and the excavation of foundation trenches for piling and ring beams for the construction of a three-storey extension to south and south-west of the library.
Following the insertion of the piles, the trenches excavated for the ring beams were approximately 0.6–1m wide and 0.8–1m deep. The excavated material consisted of layers of clay and stone mixed with modern red brick and construction materials (reinforced steel bars, lumps of concrete and plastic pipes).
In each of these trenches, construction depth was achieved within layers of modern disturbance/construction layers or directly atop glacial clay subsoil.
No archaeological features, remains or deposits were identified within the boundaries of the proposed development area (PDA) during archaeological monitoring works at the site.
