Archaeological monitoring was undertaken at the site of proposed development at Nailor’s Row, off Bishop Street Without, Derry, Co. Londonderry, between June and August 2017.
This monitoring of groundworks was associated with a Public Realm Enhancement scheme, to provide Environmental Improvements including revised access and paving, improved public realm shared surface with new street lighting, tree planting and street furniture (Planning Ref: LA11/2016/0218/F) for Apex Housing Association Ltd.
The proposed development site lies within an area of significant archaeological potential, with numerous archaeological sites and monuments being located within the general vicinity, including the State Care monument of the Derry City Walls (LDY 014:033) and a sizable archaeological excavation in advance of housing (LDY 014:064). In addition, several Industrial Heritage sites are recorded as being located within the immediate vicinity, though none are recorded as being located within its boundaries.
Sub-surface works were relatively limited and almost entirely restricted to layers associated with the construction of the existing road and associated services. Works undertaken comprised the removal of existing road surfaces, kerbs and paving, the laying of ducting for services, alterations to the existing drainage and the subsequent relaying of road surfaces, kerbing and paving. Additional works included the replacement of street furniture and lighting and tree planting.
Removal of the Tarmac road surface within the portion of roadway extending approximately 120m west then south from Bishop Street at east revealed the compacted sub-base layers of the existing road. These layers were retained below additional new sub-base material for the new paved granite surface.
Within the western extent of the scheme, works within the roadway comprised the laying of a new Bitmac surface on top of the existing road.
Existing kerbs were removed along the scheme and new drainage inserted where necessary.
In addition services trenches were excavated behind the kerbs and to the immediate north of the recently laid watermain. In each of these trenches, construction depth was achieved within layers of modern disturbance/construction layers.
Works at the scheme also involved the excavation of new tree pits; a portion of red brick drainage was noted in the edge of the easternmost pit but did not extend through the excavation area.
No archaeological features, remains or deposits were identified within the boundaries of the proposed development area (PDA) during archaeological monitoring works at the site.
