An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the proposed construction of a residential development on lands 100m south of the Church of Ireland, Oldtown Road, Bellaghy.
An initial archaeological evaluation (Phase 1) was conducted for the site (licence no. AE/16/159). This evaluation is concerned with trenching across the footprint of the proposed development site. A total of 9 trenches were excavated by mechanical digger fitted with a toothless bucket. The depths of the trenches varied across the site from 0.2-1m. Subsoil was consistently a stiff plastic clay which varied in colour from orange to grey to brown and contained large deposits of stone. A large number of modern drains were identified within all of the trenches.
No archaeological features were identified during the course of the evaluation.
