Monitoring of the water main ground works was carried out along Nailor's Row, Derry. The proposed works are located within the Area of Archaeological Potential for Derry.
The ground works consisted of the excavation of a single trench approximately 250m in length, generally between 0.5–0.6m wide and with an average depth of 1.1m and a maximum depth of 11.2m. Due to the length of the trench it has been divided into 3 sections, A, B and C. Modern and older services were present throughout the trench including water, gas, telecommunications and drainage.
The evaluation identified limited archaeological deposits in the form of an early 20th-century road and a probable late 19th-/early 20th-century footpath in sections A and B (see plate).
