An archaeological evaluation was undertaken ahead of a proposed redevelopment scheme involving the demolition of existing offices and a dwelling and replacing them with new offices and two first floor apartments at 46-48 Maghera Street, Kilrea.
Three test trenches were excavated by mechanical digger fitted with a toothless bucket. The depths of the trenches varied slightly across the site with Trenches 1 and 3 extending to 0.2m in depth and Trench 2 to 0.1m. The trenches were excavated through a relatively loose modern fill material directly onto subsoil. This consisted of a loose orange/brown gravel. A single service trench was identified in all 3 trenches running north-east/south-west across the site. No archaeological features were identified within any of the trenches.
