The site of the proposed development contains two recorded monuments (CO112-030, CO112-032001) listed within the Record of Monuments and Places (RMP)and one National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH) structure (workhouse Reg. No. 20851001), but they are not located within the area of testing.
The most notable of the monuments is the Union Workhouse (CO112-030) which the hospital incorporates into its structure. The dining hall (chapel) will be affected by the proposed development, but is not within the area that will be tested. The nearby burial ground (CO112-032001) is associated with the work house. The development will not encroach on this area.
Four test trenches were excavated. The only features exposed were a modern services duct within the southern end of Trench 1 and a portion of the post-medieval boundary of the footpath leading from the workhouse mortuary to the graveyard further to the south. No archaeological features or deposits were exposed or identified.
