Excavation by Rubicon Heritage Ltd at Killeen 2 was undertaken as part of the N22 Baile Bhuirne–Macroom Road Scheme (Lot 3) Archaeological Consultancy Services Contract. The excavation was carried out on behalf of Cork County Council and funded by Transport Infrastructure Ireland.
Recorded archaeology consisted of a small spread of charcoal rich soil and heat-shattered stone measuring 3.7 m in length x 2.1 m in width and 0.0.08 m in depth. It is possible that this was briefly used and abandoned or dumped from elsewhere, possibly from adjacent burnt mound site Killeen 3. There was no trough evident in situ.
Analysis of the charcoal fragments recovered from the burnt spread showed that a variety of species were utilised. Oak dominated the assemblage followed by lesser occurrences of alder, alder buckthorn, hazel and pomaceous woods.
One radiocarbon date was obtained from alder buckthorn charcoal for the burnt spread excavated at Killeen 2. This indicated that the burnt mound activity recorded at the site was undertaken during the Early Bronze Age.
