Test trenching was carried out at a greenfield site on a number of potential features identified during geophysical survey (Licence 16R0186) and on areas to be impacted upon by ground works associated with the construction of a solar farm. A total of twelve trenches (c.1110 linear meters) were mechanically excavated on the footprint of the proposed development. Licenced use of a metal detector (Consent no. 17R0119) to assist in artefact retrieval during the site investigation was also employed.

A fulacht fiadh (CO022-044----) and a burnt mound (CO022-044001-) are located within the eastern portion of the proposed development site. A buffer zone around these monuments has been proposed by the scheme developer as part of the planning application process. The zone of notification for a further fulacht fiadh (CO022-043) encroaches at the west side and a buffer zone of 20m extending from this monument has been proposed as part of the planning application process.

Significant ground disturbance caused by land improvement works carried out in recent years was noted across the site. Testing showed that areas of heightened magnetic response identified during geophysical survey were related to these land improvement works. There were no archaeological features or artefacts noted in any of the test trenches.
