Monitoring was carried out of repair works at Levis Quay, Skibbereen, Co. Cork. Levis Quay is located on Coal Stream at its confluence with the Ilen River. At present there is no functioning quay at this location. A limited amount of excavation work was undertaken on the riverbed adjacent to the western quay wall under archaeological supervision. The works involved the removal of existing temporary shoring works and a small amount of riverbed material. The material removed from the riverbed was spread and scanned. No evidence of archaeological stratigraphy, features or objects was observed in the excavated material. The removal of the temporary shoring works revealed the basal courses of the quay structure. The exposed sections of quay wall were rapidly photographed before the structure was re-stabilised. In keeping with the rest of the structure, the basal courses comprised horizontally-laid stone measuring on average 0.2m in height and up to 0.8m in length. There was no evidence of the original mortar at this location.
