This test excavation was carried out as part of a pre-planning assessment. Site CL018-053 was identified and its nature and extent described and recorded; the site had been identified from an aerial photograph and previous site inspections had been inconclusive. The remainder of the site (7.3 ha) was tested with 10 trenches. The southern part of the site had been commercially exploited as a quarry and the 10 trenches were concentrated in areas not impacted upon. Trenches in the north-west corner of the site revealed features of potentially prehistoric origin. A burnt spread / levelled burnt mound was noted in Trench 1 at ITM 539669 / 688296 and another possible feature in Trench 2 defined by dark soil with extensive charcoal flecking at ITM 539678 / 688268. Trenches along the western limits of the site exposed karst limestone just below the sod. The eastern part of the site showed relatively good agricultural soils uninterrupted by archaeological features.
