Archaeological testing at a proposed Waste Treatment Facility at Lismagratty and Corranure, Co. Cavan was carried out on 1 and 2 June 2017. There are no recorded monuments within the confines of the proposed development area, the nearest monument is a Ringfort/Rath (CV021-063----) located roughly 120m to the north in the same townland.
Twelve trenches were excavated. The testing programme exposed a largely natural stratigraphy. A small area of burning measuring 1.2m from north to south by 1m was identified in Test Trench 11 and a burnt mound/possible fulacht fiadh measuring roughly 13m east-west x 8.5m was identified in Test Trench 10. This trench was extended to the east and west to ascertain the extent of the feature.
The burnt mound was made up of fire-reddened and -cracked stone within a matrix of burnt and blackened sandy silty clay and measured 13m east to west by 8.5m. No charcoal was visible. Natural subsoils varied in colour from white/yellow to reddish brown.
The sites was covered in geotextile and backfilled.
