A test excavation was carried out to assess the archaeological potential of a new waste water treatment system at Altamont House & Gardens, County Carlow. The new system was located adjacent to the zone of archaeological potential of the site of a fortified house (CW013-079) associated with Altamont House. The desk-based assessment and test excavation uncovered the remains of disused field systems (plough furrows and gullies) in the semi-circular field to the front of the house. No datable evidence was found so an association with the original fortified house cannot be ruled out at this stage.
