The archaeological evaluation was conducted ahead of the submission pf a planning application for a residential development on lands at Ashley Gardens, Armagh. A recorded monument, ARM 012:018, identified as an enclosure, is located within the proposed development. The purpose of the evaluation was to identify if any elements of the enclosure extended into the development area.
Three test trenches were excavated across the northern corner of the site using a back-acting machine fitted with a toothless bucket. Topsoil was found to extend to a depth of 0.35-0.4m in all of the trenches. This directly overlay naturally occurring subsoil which consisted of an orange glacial till.
No evidence of the enclosure was identified within the trenches. Modern disturbance in the form of a drainage ditch was noted in Trenches 1 and 2.
