An archaeological evaluation was undertaken ahead of the proposed redevelopment of land to the front of Tandragee Primary School to provide additional car parking facilities and a new one-way traffic system.
A series of 5 test trenches were excavated by mechanical digger fitted with a toothless bucket. All trenches were 1.8m in width. Trenches 1-4 were excavated to a uniform 0.3m depth and Trench 5 was excavated to a maximum depth of 0.5m. This represented the level of ground reduction required for the deposition of hardcore material to construct the play areas and car-parking facilities. Naturally occurring subsoil was identified within all trenches, however the western half of both Trenches 2 and 3 contained significant deposits of modern fill which continued beyond the level of ground reduction required. Modern services and drains were noted crossing most of the trenches.
All material removed from the trenches was examined for artefacts, in particular relating to the 17th-century rebellion. There was no evidence of any archaeological features/deposits identified within any of the trenches.
