An archaeological evaluation was undertaken prior to the proposed development of a site at 15 Main Street and 28 Point Street, Larne, Co. Antrim.
The evaluation consisted of the excavation of five test trenches across the site using a back acting machine fitted with a toothless bucket. The depths of the trenches varied across the site depending on the depth at which subsoil could be reached, between 0.4m to 1.4m. In all cases modern fills were removed directly onto naturally occurring subsoil. Beneath the modern ground surface was made ground containing a large amount of gravel, rubble and domestic rubbish including plastic bags and tin cans. It directly overlay subsoil which was the same across the site and was a mid orange brown – mid orange silty sandy clay containing moderate amounts of stone.
No archaeological features were identified within any of the trenches.
