An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the proposed construction of a new retail unit at lands between the rear of 11-19 Main Street, Sheils Court and the rear of 16-26 Charlotte Street, Ballymoney. The site is located within the area of archaeological potential for Ballymoney.
The proposed development site has been subject to extensive ground reduction in the recent past. This ground reduction was conducted to facilitate the insertion of a concrete pad across the central area of the site. Inspection of the area to the north of this pad suggests that the site has been reduced for the most part down to the level of naturally occurring subsoil. Removal of the pad revealed a layer of modern fill and hard core. This material extended to a depth below the current levels of subsoil suggesting that this area had been reduced down further. This process will have removed any potential archaeological deposits from this area of the site. To facilitate further assessment of the site, three test trenches were excavated in those areas which appeared not to have been subject to modern ground reduction.
No evidence of any archaeological deposits were found during the evaluation.
