An archaeological evaluation was undertaken prior to the proposed redevelopment of the existing Windsor House Bedford Street, Belfast. The development is to retain the existing structure of the building, remove the podium and external envelope and install a new façade treatment on augmented tower and create a new podium block.
Monitoring of all grounds was undertaken. The ground penetrating works were carried out in 2 phases. The initial phase consisted of the lifting of existing surfaces and the removal of foundations of structures associated with the main tower. Windsor House was constructed in 1974 and the initial ground works were contained within material relating to this. Notable within this was the original crane pad inserted to allow construction of the tower. This was located on the south side of Windsor House. Following the removal of these foundations piles were inserted along the southern, eastern and northern frontages. Further ground reduction was then conducted to facilitate the construction of the pile caps. Again this ground reduction was conducted through material which had been used to build up the site during the 1970s construction of Windsor House.
No archaeological deposits identified during the course of the ground reduction.
