An archaeological evalution was undertaken ahead of the proposed demolition of the existing building and construction of a new building containing 3 apartments at 8 Causeway View, Portrush.
A single trench was excavated using a back-acting machine fitted with a toothless bucket to the levels of naturally occurring subsoil or archaeological strata, whichever was the highest. The trench extended approximately east-west across the development area, with a length of 20m and a width of 2m. Two fills were removed, the first consisting of a layer of concrete and rubble. The second consisted of a dark grey sandy clay, with frequent inclusions of small stones, brick and concrete. Fragments of metal and ceramic pipes were also present at various intervals throughout the trench. It had a typical depth of 0.3m, though towards the east portion of the trench a maximum depth of 1m was reached. This overlay naturally occurring subsoil which consisted of a compact yellowish-brown clay with frequent stone inclusions. No evidence of any archaeological deposits was identified within the trench.
