An archaeological evaluation was undertaken ahead of the proposed construction of a residential development at Belmont Road, Antrim, Co. Antrim. It is proposed to undertake the site in 3 phases, this report deals with phase 1 of the proposed development.
A series of 30 test trenches were excavated by mechanical digger fitted with a toothless bucket. The depths of the trenches varied only slightly across the site from 0.25m to 0.5m across the site. In all cases topsoil was removed directly onto naturally occurring subsoil. Topsoil was a moderately soft silty clay containing only occasional to moderate amounts of stone. It directly overlay subsoil which was a mid orange brown/mid orange silty sandy clay containing occasional to moderate amounts of stone.
No archaeological features were identified within any of the trenches.
