A series of eleven mechanical trenches and five hand-dug trenches were excavated across the proposed development area to ascertain the findings of the previous geophysical survey. Of the eleven mechanically-excavated trenches, nine showed evidence of archaeological material in the form of three large linear ditches, several field boundaries (that do not appear on OS mapping), two small pits and the remains of a possible roundhouse. The five hand dug trenches did not show any evidence of archaeological remains. At this stage no further work was carried out, the features were re-covered and it was decided with agreement of the DfC HED archaeologists that an archaeological condition would be placed on the planning application to allow for further investigation of the archaeological remains if the site goes to development.
