The investigation was undertaken in advance of Enniscorthy Flood Defence Scheme.

100 boreholes were carried out in the course of the investigative works, along the lands on the east of the river.  The purpose was to determine the ground characteristics where flood defence walls are proposed within the scheme.  Shell, auger and rotary boreholes were drilling methods implemented.

15 grab samples were taken within the River Slaney, to determine the characteristics of the river bed material where dredging was proposed.

There were 22 Piezo cone locations along the entire works area. These were to probe the ground surface and measure soil shear strength and penetration response of the ground on the land. 41 trial pits were excavated within the entire works area, using an excavator and generally to a depth of 2m, however, some were excavated to a depth of 4.5m. There were 28 slit trench locations within the proposed work area, opened to establish the existing underground services along the scheme.

Two boat timbers were identified and recovered from Grab Sample. One is ‘one half the basal keel for a flat-bottomed vessel’ and the second is partial remains of one of the rib timbers (Niall Brady, ADCO). A third had a wedge-shaped profile, which Susan Lyons has suggested indicates it was finished using an adze.  Other timbers retrieved from the river were determined to be a keel, framing timbers and a framing timber which had been attached to the keel.

The assemblage of pottery, glass and roof tile recovered comprised of pearl ware, glazed red earthen ware, roof tile and glass.
