Cloghanumera 1 was located along the route of the N52 Cloghan to Billistown Road Improvement Scheme. Excavations were undertaken on behalf of Westmeath County Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland. Cloghanumera 1 was discovered during advance archaeological testing undertaken in November and December 2015 by Irish Archaeological Consultancy Ltd (IAC) (Sutton and Coughlan 2016, Licence Ref.: 15E0494).
Excavation revealed the remains of series of pits, post-holes and a single hearth which occupied a small natural terrace. Initially, the concentration of features suggested a possible occupation site but no structure was discernible in the identified features. A small number of finds, including some possible worked lithics, a possible sherd of prehistoric pottery and a possible loom weight, were recovered during excavation.
