Test trenching took place at Waterpark College in advance of the construction of a proposed extension to the school. The works took place in the playing fields to the east of the existing school buildings. The topsoil was dark brown silt and measured 0.3m deep. A considerable deposit (up to 1.2m deep) of building debris, refuse and soil was identified under the topsoil intermittently throughout the test trenches. In two test trenches horizontally laid wood planks were identified cut into the natural subsoil. These wood planks had evidence of working, and appeared to have held uprights (since removed). The wood planks likely relate to river abutments to the Suir dating from the early 20th or 19th century. These artefacts were left in situ, and the NMS was informed of the discovery. No other archaeology was identified in the test trenches.
