Pre-construction test trenching was carried out at Newtown School in advance of a proposed extension. The school is situated near the apex of a gradually rising height, overlooking the south-east side of Waterford City. Topsoil was a humic mid brown fine silt (0.3m deep). Natural subsoil was greyish light brown sandy clay. No archaeology was identified.
