Monitoring of the initial ground disturbance works on the site of the new Primary Care Centre for Waterford took place intermittently between 21 July and 10 October 2016. Monitoring was requested as a condition of planning (An Bord Pleanála condition No.4 a-c). The monitoring did not reveal any features of archaeological significance.

The site had relatively shallow soils sitting on natural subsoil throughout. The site was formerly agricultural fields belonging to the St Otteran’s Farm. Faint traces of cultivation furrows and plough marks were observed throughout. A removed field boundary was observed crossing the site. The topsoil was full of broken pottery sherds, most of which date to the operation of the hospital. Some earlier fragments, including medieval pottery, were also recovered from disturbed contexts.

The monitoring results correspond to the findings of the test excavations carried out previously (Maurice Hurley 2014, 14E0042). The wide arrays of pottery sherds recovered appear to have been deliberately dumped within the fields during the operation of the hospital.
