Pre-development archaeological evaluation works were undertaken within the site on 10 October 2016. Six evaluation trenches comprising a total of c.240m of linear trenching were excavated within the fenced-off area used as a site compound. In addition, four test-pits were excavated within the area of the existing carpark.
Within the west and south-east portions of the compound area, excavation of the trenches revealed glacial subsoil at a depth of 0.15–0.3m. Excavation within the north and north-east portions of the compound area revealed modern overburden that overlay the glacial subsoil to a depth of 0.6–1.4m.
Subsoil disturbance was noted throughout, with evidence for previous activities including modern rubbish pits, the insertion of stone-filled land drains, services trenches and partial remains of the foundations of 20th-century buildings which previously occupied the site.
Excavation of the test-pits within the carpark area revealed infill/overburden overlay the glacial subsoil to a depth of 0.8–2.2m.
No archaeological features, remains or deposits were identified during the evaluation works.
