Test excavation took place from 14-22 November 2016 in advance of proposed public footpath bordering the northern side of Circular Road, Cashel, at the northern foot of the Rock of Cashel. The test excavation comprised a continuous strip line coincident with a preliminary drainage installation associated with the construction of the path, 440m in overall length and 1.8m in width.

The stratigraphy consisted of 0.15-0.25m sod and topsoil, over 0.2m pale grey to brown silty soil, over brown mottled yellow to orange sandy silt to yellow grey sandy silt and limestone.

A shallow pit containing charcoal-rich soil and fire-burnt limestone and sandstone was encountered at national grid reference S0715240898. Samples have been obtained for archaeobotanical and charcoal analysis. Random squared rubble limestone and red brick was used to create a south-east to north-west orientated compactly sealed 18th-century culverted channel to channel spring water at national grid reference S0710540869.
