Archaeological assessment was requested in advance of a proposed development at Knockbeg West in Collooney, Co. Sligo. The development consisted of the construction of a 'granny flat' an extension to the rear of an existing dwelling.

The proposed development works were located within the marked area for SL026:023 Enclosure. Records indicate this enclosure as being identified on an aerial photograph.
Archaeological testing was carried out across the location for the proposed new extension. Shrubbery and concrete were cleared off and test trenching was carried out. All trenches were excavated using a mechanical excavator, a grading bucket was used once the hard layer was broken through.
There was no archaeological material uncovered during the excavation of four wide test trenches across the area for proposed extension. Examination of aerial photos and maps did not indicate any evidence for archaeological features within the footprint of proposed extension.
A site inspection does indicate a slightly curving scarp at the front or south-east end of the eastern boundary wall around the front part of the existing dwelling. This is most likely the enclosure visible on aerial image. If extended out further to the west the curve of this possible enclosure would probably lie beneath the southern end of the existing dwelling and garden to the front. No evidence for any associated earthworks or features was visible in the area to the rear or west of the existing dwelling.
Results of documentary research, archaeological testing and site inspection indicate there is no archaeological material within the footprint of proposed development area. There is a possibility archaeological material may be evident in the untested area immediately west of proposed extension. For this reason it is recommended that no landscaping or grading works be carried out outside the footprint of proposed extension without further liaising with National Monuments Service.
