Stage (iii) archaeological excavation was carried out at Castlebaldwin 1 and 2 in advance of the N4 Collooney to Castlebaldwin Road Development, Co. Sligo. The site was discovered during Stage (i) archaeological testing and was assessed during Stage (ii) Pre-Excavation Services (Registration Number E4627).
The excavation at Castlebaldwin 1 and 2 recorded the remains of two burnt spreads, three charcoal-rich spreads, 17 pits, 13 post-holes, one hearth, one possible kiln and seven possible pits. Prehistoric pottery of a possible Bronze Age date was recovered from one of the post-holes. Castlebaldwin 1 and 2 may therefore represent a small prehistoric site associated with burnt mound activity.
