A programme of monitoring was carried out by Moore Group at Killavil, Co. Sligo. The project involved the insertion, mainly by directional drilling techniques, of a new water mains pipe adjacent to the old pipe. In the vicinity of the ground work are a number of monuments. Groundworks were undertaken between October and November 2016.

The project involves the laying of 6.7km of watermains pipes in existing road in four areas totalling 26 townlands in south-west Sligo; Area 3 – Killavil. The Killavil area townlands are Ardaheen More, Ardaheen Beg, Bellanalack, Knockgraina, Knocknageeha, Rathbaun North, Killavil, Kilshalvy, Knocknageeha (Corran By.), Knocknaskeagh, Mountirvine, Ogham (Corran By.). The pits were excavated at a distance of 100m apart and measured varying widths averaging 1.2m and to a maximum depth of 1.3m as per engineering specifications. Launch and receptors pits were excavated along a network of single track rural roads as well as along a stretch of regional road, the R294 from Gurteen to Tubbercurry. The majority of these pits were excavated into grassy verges along the edge of the road. On occasion when conditions dictated the pits were excavated into existing road surfaces. Monitoring was carried out in the zone of archaeological notification for SL039-086 Ringfort – Rath. A trench excavated in the vicinity of this ringfort site revealed no material of an archaeological nature. The launch and receptor pits did not reveal any archaeological finds or features.
