Fadó Archaeology were commissioned to carry out a programme of archaeological testing at Bellanascarva, Riverstown, Co. Sligo on 1 October 2016. The site was sub-rectangular in shape and located in the north-eastern area of a large field approximately 2 acres in size. The site sloped gently from east to west and north-east to south-west. The proposed development site was located 27m from a ringfort (SL034-021).
A total of five test trenches (totally a length of 102.5m) were mechanically excavated at the location of the proposed development, which consisted of a single-storey dwelling house, percolation area, garden area and access road. The stratigraphy was consistent throughout each trench and comprised of a dark brown clayey silt topsoil over a dark orange boulder clay substrate. A test trench was excavated along the northern boundary of the site where the development was closest to the ringfort. No material of an archaeological nature was found during the course of the test trenching.
