Stage (i) Test Excavation Services was carried out as part of the Archaeological Services Contract (2016), prior to the commencement of construction works associated with the N60 Oran Realignment Road Project, Co. Roscommon, on behalf of Roscommon County Council.
This was the third phase of archaeological investigation on the scheme following on from a previous contract undertaken by Archer Heritage Planning Ltd (O’Hara 2011 and O’Hara 2012).
The current programme of Stage (i) Test Excavation Services was carried out under the existing Ministerial Consent granted to Roscommon County Council (Ref: C654) and under an extension to the previous excavation licence.
Stage (i) Test Excavation Services were carried out between 17 October and 21 October 2016. A total of 46 test trenches were excavated across ten specified areas (TA1a–TA1j), comprising a total of 2,284 linear metres of trenching. A single previously unrecorded archaeological site, Carroweighter 2, was identified in Testing Area 1e. The site consists of ten pits, one stake-hole, a land drain and a plough furrow.
It is recommended that Carroweighter 2 be fully excavated in advance of the construction of the road.
