An archaeological assessment was carried out in advance of proposed development at Killacorraun, Crossmolina, Co. Mayo. Killacorraun is located c.7km south-west of Crossmolina in north Mayo. The proposed development consists of a single residential dwelling, driveway, and percolation area.
The proposed driveway for the dwelling is located c.15m to the north-west of the bank around the enclosure of MA038:209, recorded as a Children's Burial Ground. Locals had no knowledge of the enclosure being used as a burial ground; it does have stones within it but it is difficult to discern if they are grave markers.
Testing was carried out along the driveway and footprint of the house and the nearby curving boundary to establish whether there were any archaeological remains in evidence within area of development.
Testing did not reveal any evidence for archaeological remains to the area north and north-west of the enclosure or the area where proposed development is located. The very gravelley nature of the ground encountered during testing may explain the large number of rocks and stones scattered around enclosure MA038:209; they may be more as a result of ground clearance rather than burials but it is difficult to know.
