A brick-built kiln had been exposed at the site of a documented mill complex during previous testing by Richard Gillespie (10E0449). Excavation undertaken in 2016 centred on the area of the kiln and also revealed extensive evidence of the late 18th-century mill, mill race, wheel pit, culverted tail race and internal floors and two corn-drying kilns. The mill originally spanned the mill race with buildings on both sides. The south side has been significantly disturbed by the existing N5 but the plan of most of the northern building was recovered. A number of stone-lined drains were exposed below the floor and an internal structure that may have supported the gear mechanism was exposed. A curved groove in the stones along the north side of the wheel pit illustrates that the wheel was quite large (over 2.5m in diameter). Beyond the wheel pit the tail race is culverted and is still intact for a distance of at least 15m but is collapsed after that.
