A burnt stone spread (F3) measuring 4.2m by 3.8m by 0.15m in depth was identified at Knockbrack 1. A timber-lined trough below the spread was excavated. It measured 2.16m by 1.24m with a depth of 0.14m. The trough appeared to have been cut from above the level of the surrounding peat which exceeded 0.5m over much of the site and appears to rest on natural shale. An outcrop of rock was present immediately beside the mound.
Soil and environmental samples were taken from the burnt mound and trough including timbers. Radiocarbon analysis of any charcoal present should provide a date range for the use of this site.
