Two burnt stone spreads (F03), separated by an east-west field boundary, were identified at Cloondeash 4. The first spread measured 12m by 11m approx. while the second was L-shaped in plan and measured 15m by 2m-4m approx. A pit 1.5m by 0.5m contained a ceramic cup within its fill. Excavations identified a number of features below the spread including 6 shallow linear slots and a number of small shallow pits or post-holes that may have represented a temporary structure or windbreak, but no trough. The spread varied in thickness throughout from 0.2m to 0.6m at the north-western quadrant.
A total of 20 soil and environmental samples were taken; 7 from the burnt mound, 1 sample each from the remaining features on the site. Radiocarbon analysis of any charcoal present should provide a date range for the use of this site.
